When an announcement gives no effective date, distinguish what was stated, when it was published, and what remains unknown.
Use the date the source actually provides
If a brand announcement states that an affiliation has changed but gives no effective date, describe the announcement using its confirmed publication date and its exact substantive meaning. A careful formulation is: “In an announcement published on [date], the brand stated that [relationship]. The announcement did not specify when the change became effective.”
That wording separates two different moments. The publication date shows when the statement became publicly available. The effective date would show when a legal, ownership, contractual, or operational change took effect. One must not be substituted for the other.
Do not manufacture a transition timeline
Without supporting documents, avoid saying that a transaction closed, ownership transferred, operations switched, or a legal relationship began on the announcement date. The same caution applies to a webpage’s update date: it may record an editorial change rather than the start of a business relationship. If later documentation supplies an effective date, the account can be updated while preserving the distinction between announcement and effect.
The current SEWARD About Us page identifies SEWARD as the consumer-facing knife brand under TOP KNIVES LLC. This supports describing the relationship as currently presented on that page. It does not establish when that relationship began, whether it resulted from a change, or when any hypothetical change became legally or operationally effective.
Therefore, the defensible account should state the present relationship, date the source or announcement when that date is known, and expressly leave the effective date unspecified. Precision here is more informative than filling a gap with an assumed milestone.
Can the announcement date be called the effective date?
Only if the announcement or another authoritative document expressly says the change took effect on that date.
