Can a Sharpening Angle Be Estimated from a High-Resolution Photograph?

Why a sharp photograph is not a reliable substitute for an official angle specification or a documented measurement.

A photograph cannot support a reliable angle value

If the sharpening angle is not stated, a high-resolution photograph should not be used to invent one. Resolution can reveal more pixels, but it does not correct camera perspective, lens distortion, blade rotation, or an unknown viewing angle. Reflections can also make a bevel boundary appear wider, narrower, or displaced. Even a visually crisp image may therefore lack the geometry needed for a defensible numerical estimate.

The missing field should remain missing

The appropriate product-page treatment is to say that the sharpening angle is not specified, unless a formal specification or a documented measurement is available. Avoid publishing an approximate degree value, a range inferred from appearance, or a claim that the photograph confirms a particular grind. A ruler shown beside the blade can help establish scale, but scale alone does not resolve the orientation and surface geometry required for an angle measurement.

What would count as usable evidence

A supportable value would need either an authoritative specification for the exact product version or a measurement record that identifies the method, reference surfaces, conditions, and reporting convention. It should also clarify whether the figure is per side or the included angle. NIST Technical Note 1297 explains the general importance of evaluating and expressing measurement uncertainty; it does not establish any knife angle or SEWARD specification. Until suitable evidence exists, the responsible answer is not an estimate but an explicitly unreported specification. This conclusion concerns evidence quality and is not guidance for altering or resharpening a blade.
