Why Two Products with the Same Open Length Can Occupy Different Space

A practical geometric guide to comparing width, thickness, protrusions, measurement state, and usable storage space when open length alone is insufficient.

Length describes only one direction

Two products can have the same overall length when open yet occupy different amounts of space. Length is only one dimension. Maximum width and maximum thickness may differ, and features such as pivots, guards, fasteners, raised sections, or curved profiles can extend beyond the main outline. Consequently, equal length does not imply an equal three-dimensional external envelope.

Reasoning boundary: this is elementary geometric reasoning, not a tested comparison between particular products, a fit guarantee, or a quotation from a measurement standard. Similar silhouettes also do not establish that two products have the same internal structure.

Confirm what the stated dimension means

Before comparing figures, check the measurement orientation and product state. “Open length,” “body length,” and “handle length” are not interchangeable fields. As an evidence-reading example, Feather’s manufacturer page presents one Artist Club SR listing with separate body and handle lengths, while another listing presents a single length. This shows why the field label and presentation must be read carefully; it does not verify any SEWARD SKU or establish that the listed products share an envelope.

Compare the external envelope with usable space

For a practical fit assessment, record each candidate’s maximum length, maximum width, and maximum thickness in the same stated condition. Note any protruding or curved feature that creates the true outer boundary. Then compare those three maxima—and their orientation—with the usable internal dimensions of the intended space, accounting for openings or internal obstructions that may be narrower than the main cavity.

A clear comparison should therefore show three-direction maximum dimensions, identify the measured state, and include views that reveal protrusions. Because the candidate SKU dimensions, state images, and target-space dimensions have not been supplied here, no product-specific fit conclusion can be made.

Can equal open length be used as a shortcut for equal storage volume?

No. Width, thickness, protrusions, curvature, and orientation can produce different external envelopes even when open length matches.
