Folding Knife vs Lock Knife: What the Terms Actually Describe

A plain explanation of how folding knife and lock knife are used as terms, why the labels overlap, and what to check on a listing instead of relying on the name.

A practical way to read either label

When a page calls a knife folding, look for a separate statement about how the blade is held open. When it calls a knife a lock knife, look for the lock type and for the instructions covering opening, closing and release. Where either statement is missing, treat the term as a category label rather than a specification.

The same habit applies to blade replacement and care. A folding format does not by itself tell you whether the blade or any other part is user-replaceable or serviceable, and a lock does not tell you how to maintain it. Follow the manual supplied with the specific model, and ask the seller about anything the listing leaves unstated.

Is a lock knife always a folding knife?

In ordinary usage, a lock knife refers to a folding knife whose blade is held open by a locking mechanism, so the two labels usually describe the same object from different angles. A fixed-blade knife is not normally called a lock knife, because the lock question arises from the folding joint.

Does calling a knife folding mean it has no lock?

No. Folding describes the pivot and storage arrangement, not the presence or absence of a lock. A listing that says only folding has not stated whether the blade locks, so check for separate wording about the locking mechanism.

Does the Compact Folding Utility Knife with Keyring & Replaceable Blade state its lock type?

No. The listing describes a secure locking mechanism for controlled cutting but does not name the lock type or give a rating. It does state a replaceable standard utility blade with quick, tool-free replacement and that five spare blades and a user manual are included.
